American Opera Projects

AOP Programs

The core of American Opera Projects, First Chance allows composers and librettists to hear their work in part or in full for the first time before an audience, with live singers and accompaniment. American Opera Projects does not simply bring great operas to the public – we involve them every step of the way. The program allows the participation of audience members to help hone and adapt new works. Through question and answer sessions to collecting personal feedback, we help artists discover their own unique voices and discover the unique ears for which they are creating.
The nationally recognized Composers & the Voice Workshop Series annually selects six composers to work with the company’s Resident Ensemble of Singers. The primary focus of the Composers & the Voice series is to give composers extensive experience working collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice. more...

Focusing exclusively on the art of the libretto, AOP has created The Libretto Reading Series. Under the supervision of director Ned Canty, the program provides librettists (and composers) an opportunity to hear a new work read aloud, to discuss its structure, characters, themes, and pacing, and then to develop it over a period of time through workshops and creative sessions.
AOP Helping Hands supports the creation and presentation of new music by providing artists with administrative structure, organizational support and community outreach.
The American Opera Projects Apprentice Program allows aspiring artists and arts managers with an interest in new opera a chance to develop their skills in an apprenticeship with the company’s artistic and executive directors as well as to experience the inner workings of an independent and creative not-for-profit organization in New York City. more...
