AOP's mission is to identify, develop and present new and innovative works of music theater by emerging and established artists and to engage our audiences in an immersive, transformative theatrical experience.
AOP (American Opera Projects, Inc.) is a driving force behind the revitalization of contemporary opera and musical theater in the United States through its exclusive devotion to creating, developing, and presenting new American opera and music theatre projects.
Founded in 1988 by Artistic Director (1988-2001) Grethe Barrett Holby, AOP has commissioned new works from some of this country’s most talented composers and librettists, and steers projects through from initial conception to final production.
AOP developed productions have appeared at the Lincoln Center Festival, London’s Royal Opera House, New York City Opera, the Fort Worth Opera Festival, Skirball Center at NYU, the Guggenheim Museum, Symphony Space, the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia, the Massachusetts International Festival of the Arts, The Goethe Institute, Berlin’s Stükke Theater and Max Kade Auditorium, Aleksander Fredro Teatr in Poland, the Ensemble Theater am Petersplatz in Vienna, TADA! Children’s theater, The Center for Jewish History, 1794 Meeting House, the Daryl Roth 2 Theatre, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and at many out-of-doors performances sponsored by the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation.
AOP is a member of OPERA America, Fort Greene Association, the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance, the New York Opera Alliance, and Alliance of Resident Theatres/ New York (A.R.T./NY). American Opera Projects is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
Directions
American Opera Projects is located in the Alliance of Resident Theaters' South Oxford Space, at 138 South Oxford Street, between Atlantic Avenue and Hanson Place, in Fort Greene, near downtown Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The building is a five story Federal style stone and brick building with “Visiting Nurses Association” carved above the entrance.

BY SUBWAY
C train to the Lafayette Ave. station in Brooklyn. Take the South Oxford St./Hanson Place exit. We are at 138 South Oxford Street, near the corner of Hanson Place.
2, 3, 4, 5, B, Q, or LIRR to Atlantic Avenue (Barclays Center) station in Brooklyn or the
D, N, or R trains to Pacific Street. Exit the station at BAM/Hanson Place. Walk up Hanson Place five blocks (away from Flatbush Ave.). Turn right on South Oxford Street. We are on the first block on the right.
G Train to Fulton Street. Walk 3 blocks up Fulton Street to South Oxford Street. Turn right on South Oxford. Cross Hanson Place. We are located on that block.

BY CAR
FROM MANHATTAN & BRONX: Take Canal Street going east to the Manhattan Bridge. Cross the bridge into Brooklyn. Stay in the left lane, following signs to Flatbush Avenue. (The left lane will turn into Flatbush Ave.) Make a left onto Fulton Street. Continue past the intersection of Lafayette Ave. and Fulton Street. Pass South Oxford Street and make a right on the next street, Cumberland. Make a right on Atlantic Commons and a right on South Oxford. We are on the left-hand side of that block.
West Side Hwy/Henry Hudson Pkwy or FDR to Brooklyn Bridge to Atlantic Avenue. Make a left onto Atlantic Avenue. Continue on Atlantic through the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues. Make a U-Turn at Carlton Avenue. Turn right onto South Oxford Street.
FROM QUEENS & BRONX: Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) to Tillary Street. Make a left onto Flatbush Avenue. Make a left onto Fulton Street. Continue past the intersection of Lafayette Ave. and Fulton Street. Pass South Oxford Street and make a right on the next street, Cumberland. Make a right on Atlantic Commons and a right on South Oxford. We are on the left-hand side of that block.
FROM PHILADELPHIA: Take 95 North from Philadelphia. Get on the NJ Turnpike. Take Exit 14C to the Holland Tunnel. Once in Manhattan, take Canal Street going east. That will take you over the Manhattan Bridge. Stay in the left lane, following signs to Flatbush Avenue. (The left lane will turn into Flatbush Ave.) Make a left on to Fulton Street. Continue past the intersection of Lafayette Ave. and Fulton Street. Pass South Oxford Street and make a right on the next street, Cumberland. FROM STATEN ISLAND: Belt Parkway to Atlantic Avenue. Continue on Atlantic through the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues. Make a U-Turn at Carlton Avenue. Turn right onto South Oxford Street.
