AOP Programs

"Brooklyn and the rest of the city will benefit from future collaborations like these.”
- curatormagazine.com
Since 2000, AOP has made its home in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in New York City.
Besides the development workshops that take place in our home at South Oxford Space, AOP goes out into the community to present free, outdoor performances throughout Brooklyn. They take place in parks, streets, libraries, schools - everywhere that opera can and should be heard.
AOP attracts audiences from various cultural backgrounds not traditionally marketed to by opera organizations at a price everyone can afford and proves that opera is an exciting and relevant form of entertainment that speaks to the rich diversity of the American experience.
AOP performs scenes from The Summer King on the sidewalk in front of Five Myles Gallery in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The opera by Daniel Sonenberg retells the life of the great Negro League homerun hitter, Josh Gibson.
(l) Composer Alvin Singleton demonstrates his innovative musical techniques to students at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts.
(r) Singers perform music set to the poetry of Walt Whitman at the Make Music NY festival in Fort Greene Park.
AOP Community Partners
The Walt Whitman Project
The Walt Whitman Project, a Brooklyn-based community arts organization, is devoted to exploring the life and influence of this great American writer through readings of his poetry and prose and performances of musical compositions based on his works. AOP partners with the Walt Whitman Project by commissioning and presenting music based on the poetry and prose of Brooklyn's most influential bard.

Fort Greene Park Conservancy
Fort Greene Park, located in the landmark neighborhood of Fort Greene, is a significant historic park. The mission of the Fort Greene Park Conservancy is to improve the park for the enjoyment of present and future generations. AOP partners with FGPC to bring opera not just to the park, but often about the park including music dedicated to the Revolutionary War martyrs memorialized there.
